Transcending Identity, Igniting Creativity: WeXL’s Boundless Filmmaking Celebrates Joyful Collaboration Between Youth and Mentors

WeXL.org, a trailblazing nonprofit dedicated to fostering creativity and equity, celebrates the completion of its first in-person Boundless Self-discovery Filmmaking program. Thanks to Oakland-based thisspace, a startup connecting communities, WeXL has partnered with The Village Project SF to create a dynamic, fun, and engaging environment at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church in the Western Addition. A harmonious collaboration unfolded as young creators aged 5 to 11 explored their passions while making movies.

Inspired by WeXL’s vision, “Together We eXceL as Creators for an Equitable World,” the program encouraged learning from seasoned professionals and initiated an energetic, symbiotic relationship between mentors and students. The five-week program was full of laughter, camaraderie, and an atmosphere of shared creativity.

“The joy, the energy, the creativity that filled every session were testament to how powerful and fun learning can be when we come together,” says WeXL founder Arabella DeLucco. “This program was not only about imparting filmmaking skills. It was about dissolving barriers, cultivating mutual respect, and igniting a shared passion for storytelling that transcends individual identities.”

Industry professionals — Khepera Batties taught documentary filmmaking; Keika Lee and EunBi Chang, animation; Marissa Smit, acting; and Antonio Garro, green screen and editing. The mentors guided participants to discover their creative potential in a fun and nurturing setting.

“Watching the students create their films with enthusiasm and imagination is inspiring, and it reminds me that they have unique artistic voices that the world needs,” says mentor Marissa.

The culmination of this unique and vibrant program will be an exclusive screening of the films made by the young creators at The Little Roxie Theater from 4:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. This joyous event symbolizes the collective creativity sparked when children and mentors unite in the spirit of shared learning and fun.

Following the youth screening is a panel talk on “The Future of Film & Media” in partnership with the Bay Area Film Mixer (BAFM) from 5 to 8 p.m. at 518 Valencia.

WeXL invites you to join this celebration and witness the creative brilliance nurtured through collaboration, fun, and shared respect.
